Finnair, an air-carrier of Finland, has collected about 69,772 Euros (about Rs 45 lakh) as charity from its customers in an effort to provide clean drinking water to the children of Bihar.
In partnership with the UNICEF the Finnair, as a part of “Change for Good” programme, aims at providing clean water and sanitation to the children in Bihar over the next three years.
The programme is the part of the charity work of One World Alliance airlines (a group of 12 air service operators), which managed to raise a total of Rs 45 lakh between November 2009 and January 2010. Finnair operates between Helsinki, Delhi and Mumbai and has since 1999 collected nearly one million Euros or Rs 6,5 crore through the programme for its campaign with UNICEF.
According to Kari Stolbow, South Asia director of Finnair, the money raised this year would go to support UNICEF’s “Clean Water And Environment for the Children of India” programme, which would continue to be the largest for collection for the next two years as well.
Over the years, the money acquired through Change For Good collection has been directed to education programmes in Rwanda and Nepal, AIDS programme in Vietnam and Kaliningrad and an emergency relief project in Kosovo.
