The lawyers of Navsari district have placed a request before the state government to give them benefits of the pension scheme. The Navsari Bar Association submitted a memorandum in this regard to Deputy Collector Manoj Garjre early this week.
Lawyers have cited the prevalence of such schemes in other states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to demand the benefits. From 2010, the advocates of UP have received the benefits of pension, while the scheme has already been introduced in Bihar. Over 100 lawyers from Navsari led by Bar Association president Haresh Vashi met Gajre on Thursday and handed him the memorandum. Over 170 lawyers had signed it.
The lawyers have requested that a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 be given to those who had been in practice for the last 30 years and have now crossed the age of 70. After the death of the retired lawyer, the same benefit should be extended to his wife, they said. Vashi said: “A similar practice has been implemented in UP and Bihar. Why should it not be implemented in Gujarat? The government had started various schemes amounting Rs 14,000 crore for the fishermen, and Rs 11,000 crore for the tribals. Why should lawyers be left outside?”
