Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan, in the lack of any cohesive political strategy to remain relevant in Bihar, continued with his policy of disruption that has become the hallmark of his political style since letting power slip away from his hand after the last Lok Sabha elections.
At a meeting of the LJP student wing in Patna on Monday, Paswan called for a statewide shutdown of colleges and universities on February 15 if the administration did not announce date of students' union elections by then.
Paswan said that it was the state's constitutional duty to provide free education to all and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, as in other areas, had failed in this regard as well.
"There are hardly any teachers in the colleges; most of the departments have been shut down, and student union elections have not been held in years. To bring radical changes in the state's education system, we need a revolution like the one in 1974," Paswan, who is hoping to replay the role of Loknayak Jai Prakash Narain, the architect of the 1974 revolution against the then Indira Gandhi government, said.
Other LJP leaders including Maheshwar Singh, Surajbhan Singh, and Rajya Sabha MP Sabir Ali also invoked the name of Jai Prakash Narayan to mobilize the student base that, they said, were disenchanted by the policies of the Nitish administration.
