At a meeting of the State Level Banker's Committee in Patna on Friday, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor K. C. Chakraborty took class of the bank employees advising them to show more professionalism and adopt a business-like approach in an attempt to raise the state's credit-deposit (CD) ratio.
"The banks should zero in their eyes on certain economic agendas to increase the CD ratio in Bihar. Merely acting as a politician and giving speeches are not going to resolve banks' problems," Chakraborty said.
Reminding them to reach the goal of distributing Kisan Credit Card (KCC) to at least one member of the family in a village of at least 2000 residents, the RBI Deputy Governor said that the target was attainable if the banks go about doing their business with focus and a professional attitude.
Chakraborty further said that the banks had very little to show when it came to educational loans.
"I have heard the excuse that students in Bihar do not borrow because there is no quality institution in the state. This is simply absurd because there are students who are going to study in other states like Delhi and Bangalore and they also need money to pay for their education," he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, in his talk with the Deputy Governor, apprised him of the lackadaisical approach of certain private banks who were uninterested in offering loans to investors, farmers, and students.
"This must be corrected and private banks be encouraged to start participating in the development of the state. Right now they are freely offering loans to purchase new cars but they shy away from farmers who are in need of buying a new tractor," Modi said.
