Lakhs of people today took a holy dip in various rivers and ponds and offered prayers at different temples on the occasion of Makar Sankranti in Bihar.
Thousands of people thronged at the banks of river Ganges at the state capital to take a dip.
They later took 'Tilkut' (sweetened 'tila'), curd and 'chura' (beaten rice) as per custom.
Terming the widely celebrated Makar Sankranti and 'Lohri' festival in Punjab and Haryana as symbols of India's multi-faceted cultural heritage, Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar greeted the people of the communities concerned.
"Makar Sankranti and Lohri signify departure of winter and commencement of the harvesting season," he said adding, "The celebrations of these two festivals lead to greater social cohesion and amity between the communities.
